The 580 sq.km Liwonde National Park is one of Malawi's prime wildlife areas. The reserve encompasses the wild and scenic Shire River, as well as quiet backwaters and lagoons, marshes, open savannah and floodplain, mopane woodland and hills. This wide variety of habitat supports an incredible diversity of plant, animal and bird life.
The Zomba Plateau is a magnificent table that overshadows the old colonial capital by the same name. The top of the Plateau stands at 1,800m with some peaks rising to over 2,080m.
The Lower Shire Valley is situated at the end of the Great Rift Valley and is also the lowest part of Malawi. For your stay in the Lower Shire Valley we would suggest to use Nyala Lodge, a recently renovated small lodge inside Lengwe National Park. It is within easy reach from Blantyre and offers nine comfortable double en-suite chalets.
