Mvuu Wilderness & Liwonde National Park
The 580 sq.km Liwonde National Park is one of Malawi's prime wildlife areas. The reserve encompasses the wild and scenic Shire River, as well as quiet backwaters and lagoons, marshes, open savannah and floodplain, mopane woodland and hills. This wide variety of habitat supports an incredible diversity of plant, animal and bird life.
Mvuu is fortunate to be the sole lodge in the park and is able to offer boat trips and game drives both during the day and night. Boat trips in stable handmade wooden boats are the highlight and offer the best for seeing the park's large herds of Elephant. Night boat trips are a speciality, where with the help of spotlights it is possible to encounter the huge crocodiles of the Shire up close, as well as look for two of the park's 'special' birds, the White backed Night Heron and Pel's Fishing Owl. Walks with qualified scouts are another recommended activity, as the wildlife in the park includes large breeding herds of Elephants, plenty of Hippo and Crocodile, sable Antelope, Impala, reedbuck, Oribi, Leopard, and Serval. Bird life is prolific and the park is rightly regarded as one of the finest birding spots in south and central Africa - not just for the numbers of species, but for the relative ease with which 'specials' can be seen (Osprey, Palmnut Vulture, Pel's Fishing Owl, White-backed Night Heron and Boehm's Bee-eater to name a few).
Mvuu Wilderness Lodge is a small and intimate lodge, in a stunning and secluded setting. Four large en-suite tents and a unique stone and thatch honeymoon suite are situated on the edge of the lagoon, just off the main river, each with a private view of the lagoon and the surrounding bush. A raised thatched dining area overlooking the lagoon is connected to the rest of the lodge by wooden walkways and leads onto the swimming pool, which is made of natural rock and is surrounded by a deck of fragrant Mulanje Cedar. The whole camp boasts a backdrop of indigenous fever trees.
THE MVUU CAMP EXPERIENCE
Just downstream from Mvuu Lodge, this 28-bedded camp is an excellent option for those who want to enjoy the same bush experience in a comfortable, but somewhat less exclusive atmosphere. The thatched lounge looks out onto a broad stretch of the Shire River. Hippo, crocodiles and a profusion of birds are always to be seen on the sandbank opposite, and during the dry months large herds of elephants can be seen from the bar. Dinner is often served in the open boma or on the banks of the river. Families are welcomed at Mvuu Camp.
The activities offered and areas visited are the same as for the Lodge. A boat transfer to Liwonde Town is available at an extra cost, the ride takes about an hour and half.
Accommodation varies from en-suite chalets to comfortable walk-in tents that share toilet facilities.
