Map The northern shores of Lake Malawi are among the country's most beautiful and varied areas. Less populated than the south and well within the tropics, the area has the highest rainfall in Malawi and conseguently, the most luxuriant vegetation. Remnant patches of tropical rain forest abound and the spine of the Viphya Mountains runs parallel to the lake and a few kilometres inland, providing a dramatic backdrop.

Several large rivers flow into the lake in the area, creating large marshlands, which produce excellent birding. The settlements in the area blend into this natural vegetation with picturesque villages often clinging to the hilly contours of the land. The lake is at its widest here and yet, on a clear day, one can still see the coast of Mozambique, 80 kilometres away. The beaches here are undoubtedly the finest on the lake - miles of pristine white sand interspersed with jagged rock formations and charming fishing villages. It is in the heart of this magical area that Chintheche Inn is located.

Uniquely, for a lakeshore hotel, Chintheche is able to offer a comprehensive range of activities beyond the water sports and lake. Knowledgeable guides are on hand to lead birding walks in the area ('specials' include the Bluespotted Dove, Moustached Warbler and Gunning's Robin), to arrange visits to the nearby local villages, mountain biking trails, and fishing trips with the local fishermen. The nearby Bandawe Mission also provides a fascinating look into the country's colonial past. Activities at the Inn include paddleskiing, windsurfing, sailing and trips in our sturdy wooden fishing boats to points of local interest. It also has a large swimming pool for those days when the lake is rough.

The Inn has ten brightly furnished rooms, all facing directly onto the beach and extensive grounds and gardens. Each room has private en-suite facilities and is equipped with fans and mosquito nets. There is a central dining area and bar, although dinner is usually out under the stars.
