In 1992 a relief worker flew over the scarcely populated and almost totally underdeveloped shores of Lake Niassa (Malawi) in Northern Mozambique. She looked down on beautifully clear waters, wonderfully broad beaches and seemingly never-ending bush.
As her helicopter landed she was warmly greeted by the friendly local people and wondered why she had never heard of this place before. Now she is one of the investors in the Manda Wilderness Project and an owner of Mchenga Nkwichi Lodge. The area has remained untouched since then, practically cut off from the rest of Mozambique by the huge distances involved. The people live from fishing and basic agriculture. They see few visitors, except for the guests at Mchenga Nkwichi. Set in a private area of 650 hectares, with four kilometres of beaches and rocky shoreline, rivers, forest and bush, the Lodge has been innovatively designed and built using a mix of traditional local methods and western styles, specifically to blend with the natural environment.
